Today at 74 locations around the world were held demonstrations against the killing of stray animals in Romania.
Similarly, in Amsterdam. With beautiful weather we started at the Dam and walked through the town to the Leidseplein .
Of course Stray Animal Foundation Platform was present. Similarly, the Dutch Party for the Animals, our ambassador Yvonne Kroonenberg, Karen Soeters and much more involved animal lovers. The organization was in the hands of Richard Schellekes and Marlijn Versteeg.
Stray-AFP has read the following statement:
Statement Stray-AFP
Stray AFP is an interest organization for stray animals and we bring together stray animals foundations. So today we participated on behalf of 180 organizations.
Together with 74 other locations around the world we demonstrate against the killing of stray dogs by the Romanian government. Unfortunately, Romania is not an exception. In Europe there are more countries where stray animals are culled in a horribly way by or on behalf of the governments. Bulgaria, Hungary, Bosnia, Turkey, Greece; All examples of countries where the surplus of stray animals is countered by the slaughter of the animals.
There are many studies done if butchering of stray animals is successful when it comes to reducing the numbers. There have been several studies done to find out if the slaughter of stray animals is successful for reducing diseases such as rabies. The answer is NO.
In contrast, several studies have shown the world that TNR campaigns in combination with vaccines are very successful for both reducing the number of stray animals and the number of cases of rabies in humans.
Animal welfare is indeed on the agenda of the European Parliament. However, the category of stray animals does not exist as a concrete program item. Stray animals are dumped pets, outlaws without owners who speak up for them. On top of this stray animals are also ignored by European politics so they are doubly disadvantaged.
Because of this, we strongly ask the European Parliament to put stray animal management on the political agenda. Europa should be a free democracy with animal welfare and Respect 4 life as a starting point for all of its inhabitants.
